Here are a few points that may help in understanding why the Micklem® leather feels as it does.
Eco Friendly vegetable tanned leather: All of the leather used across the Micklem range is tanned using eco-friendly methods. The leather used in the Micklem range is tanned (gets its finish and color) from the plant sources such as the brake of trees as opposed to chemicals.
REACH compliance: The manufacturing of Micklem leather adheres to stringent policy terms issued by the European Union to ensure chemicals that are harmful to the environment, employees or end users are not used during any part of the leather production.
Care is key: Oiling, cleaning and caring for your Micklem bridle from the very beginning is key. As with all leather items it can take a while for leather to soft up (be it in shoes, bags or tack).
Snaffles, drop snaffles, pelhams.
You have a long set and short set of straps to allow you to fit different styles of bits. For example, the hanging snaffle would use short straps and a loose ring snaffle would use the longer straps.
You cannot use the Micklem Bridle as a double bridle.
No, the Competition Bridle is not reinforced for this purpose and so cannot be used bitless.
The Micklem Multi Bridle is specifically designed and strengthened to withstand use as a lunge cavesson, bitless and bitted bridle.
The Micklem Bridles are approved by the FEI. However, please check with your regional organization to ensure they also allow them in their rulebooks. In many cases you must only ride bitted in them and it can only be the Competition version with no bit clips.
Care is key: Oiling, cleaning and caring for your Micklem bridle from the very beginning is key.
Oiling and cleaning will help to soften the leather. Note: As with all leather items it can take a while for leather to soft up (be it in shoes, bags or tack).
UV Percentage rates:
Bugbusters/Bug Rugs/Protectors/Flybusters/Evolutions: 60-70% UV protection
Rambo Hoody, Aussie Allrounder and Aussie Barrier: 90% UV protection
Fly Accessories, Masks: 60-70% UV protection
Mio: 60% UV Protection
The Aussie All Rounder is comprised of a highly breathable polyester fabric. However, the sweating a horse may experience is subject to the environment they live in. Like humans, wearing clothing of any sort during high summer temperatures may lead to some sweating as the body works to regulate itself.
The sweating that may be experienced in these cases are not subject to the sheets composition but the external temperatures. Rugging during increased temperatures offers additional benefits such as UV protection against sun’s harmful rays, bleaching and damage to coats during turnout.
Measured the same as for an exercise or competition sheet. The Back-Seam measurement (C-D) is used as the reference measurement required to determine the size needed in this style of sheet.
The use of a neck cover can depend on the style of horse, their physical condition and the environment they live in.
If the weather is mild with warm days and nights, the use of a neck cover may not be necessary if the horse is good at keeping their condition.
However, as external temperatures drop and rain (precipitation) increases, regardless of clip style, a neck cover will offer coverage from rain, keeping them dry and decreasing their chances of being affected by issues such as rain scald. Equal covering of the neck, which houses important muscle groups of the horse, keeps this area at a consistent temperature with the rest of their body. The use of a neck cover will also help prolong the clip of your horse.
The Horseware Ireland tail strap, combined with the positioning of darts at the rear of the Horseware Ireland blankets, allow for a secure fit without the use of leg straps. The removal of leg straps provides ease of use to owner and removes safety concerns when fitting leg straps on animals that might be young, or sensitive, in their hind legs.
Horseware tail straps come in two styles:
Our wipe clean tail cord is an elasticated PVC covered cord which is easier to clean and more flexible. It is also designed to break under extreme pressure, offering safety should your horse get caught. These are easily replaced.
Webbing tail straps are adjustable and can be extended or shortened to offer enhanced fit.
Each of the Horseware front closures are used in conjunction with our bespoke neck cuts. The shape of a horse and their physical condition should be considered when choosing the neck of a rug. The different styles of Horseware blanket necks are outlined below:
The XL and Petite collection of Horseware blankets offer a range that are specifically designed for horses that are larger or smaller than standard sizing.
SUREFIT NECK DESIGN
Surefit Neck Design found on blankets with a V-front or Disc front – The Surefit neck design allows the blanket to sit well in front of the wither, relieving any pressure and following the shape of the shoulder line it gives the shoulders room, designed for optimum fit around the neck across all breeds of horse.
ALL-IN-ONE NECK CUT
Combo Neck Blanket (All-In–One): Fully integrated neck offers one weight from ears to tail and no seams can protect the horse from rubbing.
CLASSIC NECK CUT
Classic Front (Standard Neck, double front closure): Curved to frame the horse’s neck, the straight front is easy to use. The secure closure sits aligned with the point of shoulder. Double fastened for added security.
When fitting surcingles, it is advised that one should be able to fit a four-finger vertical width between the belly of the horse and the surcingles. This offers a secure and comfortable fit to the horse wearing the blanket. Surcingles should be checked often as they can ease out over time and may require readjustment especially if it is a new blanket.
All Horseware Ireland front closures are designed and chosen with the horse’s safety and comfort in mind. Horseware Ireland rugs have different types of front closures to reflect the different shapes and sizes of the horses that wear them. As well as improved safety features, different closures are used on different fronts to help offer the best fit possible with our various cuts of neck lines.
V-FRONT CLOSURE
The V-Front Closure has easy to use, fixed, non-swivel trigger hook fastenings that are made of stainless steel for longevity & durability. The clip of the trigger hook is fastened to sit facing the chest of the horse and this helps prevent the fastenings from opening or catching on external matter. The V-Front Closure is positioned to eliminate pressure on the shoulder, allowing for more comfort while moving or grazing. Types of Horses: The V-front closure is our most versatile fitting front and can be used on a variety of equine body shapes. It is ideal for broader-built horses due to its positioning.
DISC FRONT CLOSURE
Disc Front Closure – It is light, safe and easy to use. Our Disc Front Closure incorporates our four V-Front closure points in a lighter, more flexible design. A patented design, our disc front is a quarter the weight of traditional metal front closures. It is ergonomically shaped to mirror the contours of the horse’s chest and its flat, smooth form has been developed to prevent catching or hang ups.
CLASSIC STRAIGHT FRONT CLOSURE
Classic Straight Front Closure – Easy to use, secure closure sits aligned with the point of shoulder. Double fastened for added security and is backed with secure Velcro for additional security. Types of Horses: The classic straight front closure is ideal for narrower built equines
The trigger of the clips should face in towards the body of the horse. These non-swivel trigger clips have been developed in the effort to help prevent the closure opening or being caught on anything.
Choosing between an all in one blanket and a detachable neck cover can depend on the environment your horse lives in (weather, stabling/grazing conditions) and their physical shape and condition. Each style offers different benefits to the horse wearing it.
All-In-One has a seamless all-in-one design for maximum security and comfort offering an even distribution of fill from ears to tail.
Hoods offer the user the freedom to change or remove the hood depending on the requirements of their horse. They can be removed to reflect weather conditions or can be changed depending on the weight of fill required for a given time or season.
Wither padding is used to ease pressure on the withers. The padding is designed to lift the blanket up to ease rubbing and tension on the wither and mane area. Horseware Ireland rugs that utilize a wither pad are constructed with either fiberfill or lightweight foam to offer a lightweight padding to this area making the horse more comfortable.
More surcingles do help provide a more secure fit. All Horseware Ireland turnouts are made with two or three surcingles. Rambo® turnouts are designed with three secure surcingles that gives the blanket a secure fit around the belly area. Additionally, our Rambo turnouts incorporate the Horseware unique safety system that breaks in the event of an emergency.
Three secure surcingles are commonly found on Horseware products that are cut with two leg arches.
Two surcingles are usually found on our blankets that have one leg arch.
One surcingle is commonly found on cooler and show rugs. This is because these are usually worn for shorter periods of time such as show preparations and traveling.
Leg arches are originally a unique Horseware Ireland design.
These curves in the lower hem of the rug allows for freedom of movement without the addition of extra fabric or a concentrated pressure point that are common to gussets.
They aid in helping the blanket stay secure under belly and offer additional coverage.
Keep blanket in place & prevent slipping.
Support fabric at belly of the rug to offer extra protection.
Our blankets are available with 3 or 2 surcingles: pending leg arches & blanket depth.
Surcingles are placed at specific angles & heights for optimum fit.
Yes, you can order a replacement hood on our store. If your blanket has no connections for a hood, then unfortunately you cannot join on a hood with such a style.
This means we have a treatment in the fabric that wicks moisture away from the horse’s body faster than the material alone. This treatment is bonded to the fabric and is very durable. Coolers should be washed following our washing instructions to ensure longevity of the moisture management.
If it is a lite blanket then you order a 0g lite hood, Medium weight rugs would use a Medium weight 150g hood and Heavy rugs use a 250g or heavy hood.
Denier is a unit of measurement that informs on the thickness of individual threads that are used in the makeup of fabrics. The higher a denier count is, the thicker and more durable a fabric will be. A lower denier count means the fabric will be softer and offer less durability.
When considering the strength of a turnout, a higher denier rug will offer a higher strength of fabric and more durability. For example, a turnout blanket that has a 1200D polyester outer is twice the strength and twice as durable as a blanket that is made with 600D polyester. However, 1000D ballistic nylon is stronger and more durable because the nylon fabric is stronger than polyester.
Knowing which denier to choose depends on the horse that will be wearing the blanket. It is advised that the living conditions of a horse (length of turnout period, quality of grazing area, fencing used, etc) and whether they are hard on blankets (excessive rubbing, scratching, tend to tear rugs in the past, turned out with other animals) should be factors for consideration when choosing a fabric and denier.
Polyester & Microfiber are the most popular types of lining used in Horseware Blankets.
Horseware polyester linings are breathable and offer a smooth inside hand-feel, keeping a horse’s coat smooth & shiny while the polyester linings used across our Rambo products are anti-bacterial and anti-static. Most commonly used in turnouts, some stable blankets and for lining the shoulders of fly & stable sheets.
Microfiber lining offers a cotton-like hand-feel. Breathable and secure, it is commonly used on stable blankets and sheets.
The main differences between the Horseware Ireland turnout brands are the outer fabrics that are used in each range. The most common type of outer materials used in Horseware Blankets are explained below:
RAMBO TURNOUT
Rambo® turnouts are made from 1000D+ ballistic nylon, a fabric that was first developed for flak jackets to be worn by World War II airmen. One of the toughest fabrics on the market, it offers incredible longevity and its slippery hand-feel means other horses cannot get a grip on it with their teeth. 1000D ballistic nylon is 87% stronger than polypropylene used in Rhino rugs and 132% stronger than standard 1200D polyester.
RHINO TURNOUT
Rhino® turnouts are made from 1000D polypropylene outer. Polypropylene is a stronger alternative to the widely used polyester turnout material. Rhino turnouts are unique as they are constructed differently to other turnout rugs – they’re made using a waterproof layer between the outer section and the fill known as a barrier layer, this barrier layer is still effective if the outer layer becomes damaged. 1000D polypropylene is 30% stronger than standard 1200D polyester and 193% stronger than standard 600D polyester.
AMIGO TURNOUT
Amigo® Bravo 12 turnouts are made from strong 1200D polyester. 42% stronger than standard 600D polyester outers.
The denier, weave and coating of the material used on the outer fabric are major factors for consideration. Equally, the construction of the blanket plus aspects such as stitching and hardware (front closures) are important when creating the toughest blanket possible.
Some construction features used in Horseware Ireland blankets that help increase toughness & durability are:
Bindings on Horseware blankets are finished with twin needle stitching offering a secure, durable finish to the rug’s edge.
Bar tacking is a reinforced stitching style used at key pressure points such as the tail flap, hood & liner loops and tail strap. They are used to offer extra security and reinforcement that aims to stand up to a variety of wear and environmental conditions.
Computer stitching is used on all strap webbing such as the front straps and side surcingles. These are attached to the blanket using reinforced computer stitching to offer maximum durability.
Stainless Steel fastenings: Our Rambo®, Rhino® & Amigo® Bravo 12 v-front fastenings, and also our Rambo® male/female buckles and slider, are constructed using stainless steel for long lasting wear.
Replacement safety surcingle loops can be easily ordered from out site, Rambo Plastic Loops.
At a minimum, Ice-Vibe boots should not be used within the first six weeks after a fracture. A fracture needs to mend during the first six weeks and movement and massage may irritate it causing swelling.
*Always consult your veterinarian before using Ice-Vibe® in rehabilitation to ensure it is integrated and aligns with their healing plan for your horse.
Yes, you can put them on before exercise with just the vibration to create a massaging effect to stimulate blood flow. When blood flow is increased tendons and ligaments become more elastic which can help to prevent damage during exercise.
Yes, you can put the cold packs in warm water (not the microwave) and apply them with the massage before exercise or on older horses that might have arthritis to assist to reduce stiffness.
*Do not let the packs get too hot as you could burn your horse.
The Horseware Safety Surcingle System is a safety measure added to Rambo turnouts with three surcingles. This system is created using a unique combination of Velcro and a plastic loop. The system can withstand 100kg of pressure and the plastic clip will break in the event of an emergency, giving extra protection for your horse.
The surcingle strap connects to the blanket with a plastic loop. This loop will release should the horse become dangerously caught in its surcingle straps.
The Velcro system allows for the removal of the surcingle strap for wash or repair.
In the event of the plastic loop breaking under pressure, the surcingle strap should hang on the opposite side of the blanket still connected. The surcingle strap can be re-attached using the rectangular clip until a replacement plastic loop can be attached.
For detailed instructions on how to measure your horse for a blanket or sheet, please refer to Horseware Rug Size Guide page.
The fit of your blanket is extremely important to ensure the comfort of your horse and to prevent rubbing and slippage. As horses of the same height at the wither come in a variety of shapes and sizes, it is useful to take certain measurements of your horse.
For instructions on how to measure and fit your Horseware blanket or sheet check out our Size Guide.
The Horseware liner system offers the owner increased flexibility when using blankets. During transitional months (late summer and early autumn, or winter to spring) the Horseware Ireland liner system means that different weights of fill can be used depending on how the temperatures change.
However, during seasons and months that have a consistent temperature range (mid-winter) a single fill blanket will offer a consistent temperature to the horse wearing it.
Only when the splint has settled otherwise it may react the same way as a fracture and become inflamed.
Yes, you can order directly on our site. Check our blanket accessories.
Setting three is to be used just with cold packs on bigger boned horses. Setting two is the main setting before and after exercise.
The Horseware Ireland Liner system safely and comfortably offers the ability to layer giving superior insulation properties without the need for two blankets. The liner attaches by Velcro loops to the neck area of the outer blanket, and clips attach to the back of the blanket to prevent the liner from slipping. Liners are made with polyester outer and lining, are available in a variety of fiberfill weights (100g, 200g, 300g, 400g) and can be easily washed in a domestic washing machine.
This is dependent on owner’s preference and the conditions a horse is in. As Horseware Ireland turnouts are waterproof and breathable, it is very common for them to be used in the stable.
However, factors that contribute the changing of blankets are as follows:
Wet turnout: While Horseware Ireland turnouts are waterproof, if a turnout is used during heavy showers the outer can have water running off it and onto the horse’s limbs when they come in to be stabled. It may be advisable for the turnout to be changed to offer a chance for the outer fabric to dry out.
Temperature changes throughout the day: During transitional months (late summer moving to autumn) external temperatures can be very high during the day and drop during the night. It may then be advisable that a heavier weight blanket is used at night to keep your horse warm and comfortable.

Horseware Turnouts use AquaTrans technology to keep your turnout waterproof.
Aquatrans Technology Explained:
The outer Hydrophobic layer is water hating and drives water vapor away from the outer of the turnout. Therefore, it repels the entry of any water through it coming from the outer
The inner Hydrophilic layer is water loving and draws sweat away from the body. The water vapor is then driven through the fabric and away from the turnout.
This waterproof technology is one of the best on the market and ensures your horse stays dry and comfortable when wearing Rambo®, Rhino® and Amigo® turnouts.
