A Greener Future – The Eco Collection Expands

In Spring 2021, Horseware launched its first turnout made from recycled plastic bottles, the Amigo AmECO turnout. The items in the AmECO line are made from rPET, or Recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate, which is created from melting down post-consumer plastic bottles and creating a fiber that can be woven into fabrics. It’s similar strength to other polyester yarns but offers the opportunity to repurpose plastic bottles. This year, we are expanding this line to offer two new fly sheets: the Amigo Bug Rug and the Amigo Bug Buster.

We’ve taken one of our more popular Amigo flysheets and made it sustainable! Using a knitted rPET fabric, the AmECO Bug Buster offers a sustainable, breathable, and soft flysheet that’s designed to comfortably fit your horse. The eco-friendly rPET fabric recycles 149 plastic bottles in a 78” flysheet. This fly sheet offers maximum coverage for full protection with its detachable hood, oversized tail flap, and deep cut with added belly coverage. The silver and sky-blue coloring offers strong sun-reflecting properties keeping your horse happy through the summer.

Camouflage Your Horse with the Amigo Evolution 3-in-1 Camofly

Research surrounding how flies react to zebras and their stripes suggests that the monochrome stripes confuse flies acting as a natural deterrent to the insect. Based on this principle, we have created a monochromatic pattern specifically designed to help camouflage horses from pesky bugs and flies, the Camofly. This unique print is inspired by the pattern of a fly’s wing. The layered black lines on a grey background act to create an optical illusion in the eye of a fly. The pattern breaks up the shape of the horse causing insects to struggle to identify it as a target so the flies cannot determine where to land.

The Amigo Evolution 3-in-1 offers a solution for the ever-changing weather. The 600D Ripstop Polyester top section offers waterproofing while the hybrid construction of the mesh sides offers maximum breathability to avoid overheating. The sheet’s deep cut with extended belly flap, removable hood, and oversized tail flap offer superior protection with maximum coverage keeping your horse protected from the elements of the in-between season. We’ve also included a front disc closure to remove neck and shoulder pressure preventing rubbing on these sensitive areas.

The Evolution 3-in-1 is an ideal solution for horses that may be more frequently exposed to the ever-changing Spring weather. It offers the option of acting as a rain sheet, lightweight blanket, and fly protection all in one product.

The Future Collection: The Amigo Plant Dye Turnout

Continuing our efforts to find more sustainable and eco-friendly processes, Horseware Ireland is excited to launch the first-ever plant-dyed equine collection! In fabric manufacturing, there are 8 TRILLION liters of water each year dedicated to dying fabrics. The process involves harsh chemicals that leave the water as an unusable by-product. To reduce our carbon hoofprints, we have explored innovative processes in which fabrics can be sustainably dyed. The new plant-dyed collection uses the Isatis root to create a vibrant light blue colorway. We are proud that the zero drainage and zero carbon emission of our plant-dye factory meaning that water used throughout the process can be recycled and reused.

The Plant Dye Turnout offers a breathable, waterproof 1200D Polyester with a 50G fiberfill insulation that makes it perfect to keep the chill off your horse during the cooler days of spring. The inner lining is made of a shine-enhancing polyester to prevent rubbing and enhance the shine of your horse’s coat. The blanket’s V-front closure with Surefit neck allows your horse to move and graze comfortably by removing pressure off the shoulder. Dual leg arches offer freedom of movement through the shoulder and hips to prevent any rubbing while providing maximum coverage of the belly.
