With the New Year right around the corner, we’re sharing two homemade horse treat recipes to help celebrate the past year with your favorite horse.  These quick and easy recipes are packed with natural ingredients and full of your horse’s favorite flavors whether it be apples, carrots, or peppermints.

No-Bake Peppermint Bites

Servings: 12 treats

Prep Time: 20 mins

Difficulty: Easy

INGREDIENTS:

  • 2 cups rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 tbsp molasses
  • 12 peppermints

  1. Mixed the rolled oats and water until ingredients are blended and oats are damp. If the mixture is too moist, add more oats. You can also place additional oats in a food processor and blend until a fine flour is formed. Add just a little at a time so the mix does not become too dry. You can also use this oat flour while rolling out the bites.
  2. Add molasses to the mixture and continue to stir until everything has a sticky consistency. Add more molasses if the mix is not clumping together.
  3. Dust hands with oat flour and roll a small handful into a bite-size horse treat. The smaller the treat the more you will have.
  4. Press peppermint into the center of the treat.
  5. Place treats on parchment paper then refrigerate until they harden. Keep refrigerated and stored in an airtight container for up to one week.
  6. Serve with nose boops and kisses to your favorite horse!

We’ve also got this tasty carrot and apple recipe just for horses that aren’t fans of peppermint!

A Bit of Apple & Carrot Treats

Servings: 24 treats
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 25 minutes
Difficulty: Easy

  • 2cups grated carrots
  • 1packet apples and cinnamon instant oatmeal (or another variety for a cinnamon-free treat)
  • 1½cups all-purpose flour
  • ½cups steel cut oats
  • ½cup molasses
  • 2tbsp vegetable oil + extra to grease a cupcake or muffin tin
  1. Preheat oven to 350°.
  2. Combine all ingredients and stir until well-combined.
  3. Grease a mini muffin tin by dabbing some vegetable oil onto a paper towel and wiping the inside of the muffin tin.
  4. Use a spoon to scoop each cookie portion into the compartments of the muffin tin. Press down each cookie with the back of the spoon to make sure the mixture is even.
  5. Bake for about 25 minutes until the cookies are hard. Remove and cool on a wire rack.
  6. Store in an air-tight container for up to one week.
