I’m Tori, an Equine Photographer based in Northern Ireland.  I specialise in both Equestrian Photography and Weddings, travelling all over Ireland.

I’m not from an Equestrian background but got into riding through a family friend.  It was always my dream to have my own horse, so to end up being able to work around them every day as a job too is just amazing!  I have two horses, Major and Kody, who are the biggest characters!  I love how each horse has their own personality and quirks; they are just like people.  One of my favourite parts about my job is getting to work with so many different people and horses, getting to know the different horses, when I come home from a shoot feeling like I have captured their unique personality, I know it’s a job done well. 

When did you become interested in photography and why equestrian photography? 

Growing up my dad was always taking photos and videos, so it felt very normal to begin taking photos of my own.  Any opportunity I had to steal his camera to take photos I would, I loved being able to experiment and learn as I went along. 

I have always loved horses and began riding when I was 13 and now have 2 horses. Working as a photographer allowed me to be able to get my first horse at 17 so it’s really a job that allowed me to follow both my passions!  Capturing the connection between a horse and rider is my absolute favourite thing to do so equestrian photography felt like a path to explore!  I think it’s incredible how these huge, amazing flight animals can be so trusting and allow us to be so close to them.  Having a connection and working with your horse is so special and being able to capture that moment and the emotions that go with it is really special. 

What kind of camera and kit do you use? 

I use the Nikon D850 and Sony A7iii with the 70-200mm f/2.8 lens.  This is my favourite lens for photographing horses as it gives you lots of flexibility with the zoom but also that you can move around lots if you need to change positions for the best light and angles.

Your tips for taking the best selfie with your horse. 

To take the best selfie with your horse, first get into a spot where there is good light.  Somewhere where the light will be even across the subject with no harsh shadows.  Somewhere in the shade or out of direct, harsh light so that you don’t need to squint is perfect!  Treats are always helpful, getting your horse nice and close and can always create some funny moments for your selfie!  

Your tips for taking the best Christmas Pet Portrait. 

For the best Christmas pet portrait, again find that spot that has good light!  Having someone behind the camera to get your pets attention can be really helpful, getting them to look interested and have their ears forward will really help the photo.  There’s lots of tricks than can help to get their attention, I like to use horse noises, feather dusters or even tinsel to get their attention (just be careful not to scare them!).  Patience is key, if you have a shot in mind don’t be afraid to take your time, there will be lots of outtakes on the way to getting the perfect Christmas photo!
