We were very honoured recently when the Horseware® Winter Clothing collection was chosen by Costume Designer, Susan Scott, for the latest British Telecom Advertising campaign.
Designer, Susan Scott, originally from Lisburn, returned to the province last year after having lived and worked in Dublin for nearly 10 years. She has had an amazing career to date that shows when you work hard and take a few calculated risks, you really can follow your dreams.
She was recently nominated for Best Costume Design in the film Boy Eats Girl, at the 'Irish Film and Television Awards,' held last month in Dublin. Although she didn't win this was an exciting achievement and makes it a double whammy alongside her Primetime Emmy Award nomination 2001in LA. Susan also use some Horseware clothing in this film as well!
First a little history on how it all started…
Susan graduated from the University of Ulster with a BA (Hons) degree in Fashion and Textiles Design. During her time as an undergraduate Susan won the ‘Attachment Award,’ with Elizabeth Alexandra Ltd, designing children’s wear. In 1990 she was a prizewinner with her final degree show collection at the prestigious ‘All Ireland Smirnoff Young Designer’s Award' in Dublin. After graduating, setting up her own women’s wear label in Belfast designing unique handcrafted coats and shirts; selling throughout Europe, predominantly London and Dublin, the collections for Liberty selling out in a matter of weeks.
It was in 1995 that the lure of the Film Industry beckoned and it proved to be a very smart move to Dublin. Susan started out as a Trainee Costume Designer for the internationally re-known Costume Designer- Joan Bergin (My Left Foot, Reign of Fire). |
As well as working with some of the most respected directors in the business such as Jim Sheridan, Terry George, and John Schlessinger, she also got to travel to fantastic locations to shoot, in Thailand and LA. She has met and dressed some of the most famous actors in the world - Brad Pitt, Daniel Day-Lewis, Helen Mirren, Alan Rickman, Meryl Streep, Joanna Lumley, Bill Paxton to name a few. Within three years a phenomenal record of work was achieved and by 1998 Susan had earned the fully-fledged grade of Costume Designer.
The next phase of her career as a Costume Designer saw some incredible highlights. An Emmy Nomination for the TV mini-series David Copperfield in 2001. Designing the costumes for such great directors as Sir Richard Eyre (Rockaby), in the Beckett on Film series. Creating mad character costumes for the wonderful ‘mock -u-mentary,’ Paths to Freedom (RTE). Re-designing the costumes on Riverdance The Show for their huge New York spectacular in 2000. The Gaelic football series On Home Ground (RTE). As well as these projects Susan created the look for numerous other films, TV series, commercials and theatre productions. Although having semi-retired from the film business she still likes to make films produced and crewed by old friends. Her most recent film is the zombie thriller Boy Eats Girl (Element Films), starring David Leon (Cutting It/ Alexander) and Samantha Mumba; directed by Stephen Bradley.
Costume Design always conjures up images of period piece garments worn in great epics such as Howards Way, End of the Affair or The Aviator. However a Costume Designer must be able to style modern trends, and be aware of each season’s fashion. Susan has always kept a keen interest in Fashion Design and in 2002 she was asked by a film producer to set up a children's clothing label and so 'Rufio Kids' was born. Funky clothes and special occasion wear for 2-8 years olds, now in to it’s sixth season this summer.
Susan loves being back home and since her return last September, she has certainly not been idle. Her new business Style Source offers both the Industry and the Public her unique skills as Stylist; Personal shopper and Fashion Designer. It incorporates styling outfits for commercials (new BT ad and the recent Harry Corry commercial) and fashion editorials, but ultimately to bring her skills to private clients. This is a unique business combining Image Consultancy with a Personal Shopper service to help people who have no time to shop or want to look great for a big social event and create a co-ordinated 'feel good and practical' wardrobe. Also she designs and gets one-off pieces manufactured for people with particular requirements. She has the ability to make you look completely different to your normal self and try something different.
For proof of her talents watch out for the stylish new music programme 'Blackstaff Session's' on BBC2 at 10pm and see how just great its presenter Ralph McLean looks. |
